I have been thinking a lot lately about revelation and how after we receive revelation, knowing what to do about it. Meaning which part is mine Lord and which part is yours? When it comes to trusting God do I just sit here and let Him handle everything or are there times where I should be an instrument in His hands to help further the work along. So I was talking to my friend and he said that in the story of the brother of Jared there were 3 issues and lessons! Ether 2:19
- Direction-They needed to cross the sea and the vessels didn’t have steering wheels.
- Air-they needed to be able to breathe while they were in the water, and get fresh air.
- Light- they needed a way to have light inside the vessel.
When the brother of Jared (BoJ) went to the Lord and inquired what to do the Lord told him to gather the people and go to this certain spot and that he would meet them there. He then told them to build barges and gave them step by step instructions to do so!
Air-the Lord told the BoJ exactly what to do. Make a hole in the top and in the bottom. When they needed air they could unplug one and get air if water wasn’t coming in.
Light- when the BoJ came again to the Lord and said I have done what you have asked me to do, but what about light? There is no light! The Lord this time asked the BoJ what he wanted Him to do about it. At this point He also promised him that he would protect them on the water as they were swallowed up in the sea. Jared then went up unto the mount and made glass stones. He then went to the Lord and showed him the stones and asked Him to touch the stones with his finger. The BoJ said that he knew the Lord could do all things and his faith was unshakable! The Lord then touched the stones and the BoJ saw the finger of the Lord. His faith was so strong that he couldn’t be kept from seeing the entire Lord.
Direction- after everything was in place and sealed up, they headed for the promised land. And the Lord did make the winds blow so that they could move along in the water.
The lessons about revelation here, and learning to know which part is mine and which part is His are as follows.
Air- sometimes just like with the air, the Lord will give us step by step instructions on how to handle a situation.
Light- sometimes He will ask us to think for ourselves and then come to Him to ask for more help or to know if the decision we made was correct.
Direction- and then sometimes the Lord says, Don’t do a thing. I have this! Just be patient and trust me, I will take care of it.
In my life right now I need to learn to listen to the voice of the Lord to find out if I am supposed to do something and rely on the lord for further instruction, or if he will just tell me what to do, or know if He will just take care of it and I don’t need to worry at all. It’s amazing the things we can learn from the scriptures. I’m grateful for wonderful people in my life that teach me everyday new things.
